The concept of cities, capitals and territory, although not unique is a welcome addition to the template set by AoE. The economical aspect is realistically represented through rise in prices of units and buildings which ensures you cant boom or unit spam unless you have a solid economic base.
It's one of the few RTS games where you can genuinly defeat an army 2 or 3 times the size of your army by tactics alone. The general bonuses allow you to use abilities such as entrenchment and ambush, which give you further tactical flexibility. The concept of attrition coupled with above features allow you to engage in guerilla style tactics. The flanking damage and damage received when attacked from back gives you real incentives to use maneouvres and formations. However the military strategy aspect is explored in much depth in RoN The nation/faction bonuses and unique units are similarly fun and diverse in both RoN and AoE2. For examples citizens search for work when they are left idle and farms and forests are non exhausting.
Rise of nations assign hotkey series#
Rise of nations removes the tedium of micromanagement that's present in AoE series and lets you focus on other aspects of your strategy. ( haven't played AoE3), despite the fact that I enjoy all those games. Rise of nations is hands down better than AOE, AoE2 and even AoM for that matter.
